The plantation has a long history, which is visible in the presence of old plantation buildings around the hotel. From the hotel, visitors can walk or cycle through and around the nature park. It is also possible to sail through the nature park in a canoe from the hotel.
Around 1655, an English planter was the first on the Peperpot Plantation and started a sugar cane plantation. In 1696 Simon van Halewijn came to Suriname from the Netherlands. Plantage Peperpot was founded shortly afterwards. In Sranan Tongo the plantation is called “pepre patoe”.
Tobacco cultivation was started. In 1702 people quickly switched to cocoa and around 1720 to coffee. The factory remained in production until 1998. A number of buildings have survived, including:
• The former director's residence. It contains 2 suites, 1 standard room and a restaurant and bar.
• The former officer's residence. Residence of former supervisor Plantage Peperpot.
• The drying shed next to the former director's house.
• The coffee factory. The only coffee and cocoa factory in Suriname.
In the Peperpot Nature Park you can walk, cycle, canoe and watch birds. In October 2015, the “Discovery Center” opened where the history of the plantation is shown on the basis of historical images.
